The Women Voted
Guest speaker Ruth Page Jones will celebrate the 100th anniversary of woman suffrage by telling about the role of school suffrage in the woman suffrage movement. Women in South Dakota could vote on school matters long before they gained full voting rights in 1918. Jones is a historian from Waukesha, Wis., who wrote the essay "'The Women Voted:' The Role of School Suffrage in the Woman Suffrage Movement" published in the book "Equality at the Ballot Box: Votes for Women on the Northern Great Plains." The book is sold at the Heritage Store at the Cultural Heritage Center. This program is made possible by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
