Measuring South Dakota
The South Dakota State Historical Society Museum will hold “Measuring South Dakota.” Visitors will explore three ways of measuring South Dakota using hands-on materials. They will use a sextant to determine the distance to nearby objects, measure linear distance using a reproduction Gunter’s chain like early surveyors, and create their own carpet “mountain” and draw a contour map like mapmaker Joseph Nicollet.
