History and Heritage Book Club
The History and Heritage Book Club will discuss "Land of the Burnt Thigh" by Edith Eudora Kohl when it meets at 7:00pm Tuesday, September 8th, at the Cultural Heritage Center. First published in 1938, the book tells of the trials and triumps of sisters Edith Eudora and Ida Mary Ammons as they struggled to "prove up" homesteads in South Dakota in the early 20th century. The sisters took up a claim midway between Pierre and Presho in 1907; a year later they tried homesteading on the Lower Brule Reservation. Lonis Wendt of Vivian will join the discussion group to tell about opening the Lower Brule Reservation for homesteading. Everyone is welcome to attend.
