History and Heritage Book Club
June Harvey will be the guest speaker at the History and Heritage Book Club when it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at the Cultural Heritage Center. Harvey will tell about her father and the book she wrote about him, An Incredible Life: True Stores Told by Clarence Riggs.
Riggs was born in 1908 and raised on a diary farm near Spearfish. He passed away on Jan. 20, 2002, at the age of 93.
In the book, Riggs shares accounts of growing up in the horse-and-buggy days, struggling through the Great Depression, farming in the 1930s and 1940s, owning and operating a sawmill, and about his experiences as a hunter, angler, athlete and entrepreneur.
Harvey calls her father a man who experienced life to the fullest. She hopes that those reading the book will be inspired to record their own families’ experiences.
Harvey was one of five children of Riggs and his wife, Dorothy. She was born and raised in Spearfish, where she attended high school and college. She taught physical education in South Dakota and Oregon. Harvey lives with her husband, Tom, on a small farm near Creswell, Ore.
The book is available at the Heritage Stores at the Cultural Heritage Center and the Capitol. South Dakota State Historical Society members receive a 15 percent discount on book club books.
Future book club selections are The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan on Aug. 10 and Hard Knocks by Harry “Sam” Young on Sept. 14. All book club meetings begin at 7 p.m. in the Cultural Heritage Center. The book club is sponsored by the South Dakota Heritage Fund and the SDSHS Press.
Please join us to hear June Harvey as she tells about an incredible man and his incredible life!
