Leadership Pierre - Local and State Government
Leadership Pierre participants stepped deeper into the world of public service during Session Six of the 2025–2026 program, where the focus centered on Local and State Government and what it truly means to serve a community.
The day began in the classroom with an engaging session on Delivering Exemplary Service, led by Erik Therwanger of Think GREAT. Participants explored what separates good service from truly great service, and how intentional leadership and mindset shape both organizational culture and community impact.
Learning moved beyond the classroom as the group experienced government operations firsthand through site visits across Pierre. Participants toured the Pierre Water Treatment Plant, gaining insight into the infrastructure and processes that keep safe, reliable water flowing throughout the community. The group then visited the South Dakota State Capitol and the South Dakota Governor’s Residence, where discussions highlighted the history, function, and daily responsibilities connected to state leadership.
The day also featured a panel of local professionals representing city and county government, who shared real-world perspectives on collaboration, public service challenges, and the importance of strong community partnerships.
