Oahe Chapel Pie Social
The Oahe Chapel Preservation Society is hosting a FREE pie and ice cream social at the Oahe Chapel on Sunday, July 20 from 1:30-3:30 PM. In addition to pie and ice cream, there will be lawn games and live music performed by the Bloodwashed Band. The chapel will also be open for viewing. The public is invited to attend this free event. Free-will donations will be accepted. The Oahe Chapel is located on the Oahe Dam next to the visitor center. Thomas L. Riggs built the chapel in 1877 at Oahe Mission at Peoria Flats. The South Dakota State Historical Society became owners of the chapel in the 1950s, saving it from submersion under Lake Oahe. The chapel took its place on the dam in 1964. The Oahe Chapel Preservation Society formed in 1984 to team with the State Historical Society and the Army Corps of Engineers to restore and preserve the historic structure, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
