A Monumental Evening
The 75th anniversary of the completion of Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a monument event, and the South Dakota State Historical Society is celebrating it with a special program. SDSHS Director Jay D. Vogt will set the stage for the evening with a PowerPoint about Mount Rushmore. The museum's Curator of Collections Dan Brosz will tell about the museum's new exhibit that features the construction of Mount Rushmore. Jennifer McIntrye of the South Dakota Historical Society Press will tell about the book "Love Letters from Mount Rushmore." Author Richard Cerasani's father was an artist and sculptor from Rochester, N.Y. who worked on Mount Rushmore in 1940. The book features letters between Cerasani's father in South Dakota and his mother who remained in New York. Their correspondence tells the story of Mount Rushmore from the workers' point of view. The museum will be open that evening so people can see the Mount Rushmore exhibit, and the book is available at the Heritage Store at the Cultural Heritage Center. The program is free and everyone is welcome to attend.
