
The Jumping-Off Place
"The Jumping-Off Place" will be discussed at the June meeting of the History and Heritage Book Club, sponsored by the South Dakota Heritage Fund. Set in Tripp County in the early 1900's, the book tells of hardships and adventures faced by four orphaned youngsters as they homestead on a quarter section of land. "The Jumping-Off Place" won a Newbery Honor Award, the highest children's book award in the United States, when it was first published in 1929. It was reprinted by the South Dakota State Historical Society Press in 2008. Although the book was written for children and young adults, it can be enjoyed by all ages. Everyone is welcome to join the discussion. The book is available at the Heritage Store at both the Cultural Heritage Center adn the Capitol, as well as other venues. Book club members receive a 10% discount and South Dakota State Historical Society membes receive an additional 5% discount when thye purchase th ebook at either Heritage Store.
