The collected items are disposed of by the City of Pierre. Volunteers are asked to wear closed toed shoes, bring work gloves, sunglasses, and a refillable water bottle. The Pierre-Fort Pierre Missouri River Cleanup is coordinated by the Izaak Walton League, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, Fish and Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers, and the cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre. Many area businesses also contribute to this effort. In 12 previous river cleanups more than 800 volunteers have removed over 26 tons of trash from along the Missouri River in the Pierre-Fort Pierre area. The Missouri River is a tremendous asset for central South Dakota. The cleanup is a way for you to give something back to a resource that provides so many benefits to our area.
