Capitol Centennial Family Activities
The South Dakota State Historical Society will host "Capitol Centennial" family activities from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.
Visitors of all ages can put together cornerstone time capsules and create their own round murals like those found in the Captitol Rotunda.
The Captiol's cornerstone was place in June 1908. As a time capsule, the cornerstone had a variety of items sealed inside - newspapers, photographs, coins and blueprints.
For the February 28 family activity, visitors are encouraged to bring items to put inside their own 3-inch cardboard cornerstones. Notes, photographs, small toys - all would be suitable.
Another activity will focus on the round murals that adorn the Capitol Rotunda. The large murals of Greek goddesses symbolize major interest in South Dakota, such as livestock, industry and mining, motherhood and agriculture. Reproductions of the murals are part of the current exhibit "The People's House: Celebrating the Century" on display int he Hogen Gallery. Using paper plates and crayons or markers, visitors can create their own round murals.
Visitors can also enjoy the hands-on stations in "The People's House" exhibit. They can make rubbings of the Capitol, construct Capitol replicas with wooden blocks, and design their own patterns using tile magnets on a steel table.
Activities will take place in the Hogen Gallery. There is no museum admission charge between 1-3 p.m. on February 28. All materials are provided except for the personal treasures visitors wish to put inside their time capsules.
