The South Dakota State Historical Records Advisory Board is hosting a workshop on paper preservation on Tuesday May 19th, in Pierre. The workshop takes place from 8am to 5pm at the Cultural Heritage Center. Simple Paper Making and Repairs will be conducted by Dr. Sheila Siegler. Siegler graduated from paper conservation courses at Camberwell College, London, and received her PhD. in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College, University of London. The program is free, although seating is limited. "Participants will learn to recognize different types of paper, learn about hand paper making and modern paper making, learn simple repairs and basic paper cleaning," said Chelle Somsen State Archivist for the South Dakota State Historical Society in Pierre and a member of the records advisory board. The State Historical Records Advisory Board and the public identified archival education and training issues as a concern throughout the state, Somsen said. THe board is the central advisory committee for historical records planning, coordinating archival activities in the state, and developing and implementing projects in the state that are funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commision.
