All Pierre/Ft. Pierre area residents, including government and business employees, families, and kids of all ages are invited to participate in the evening events that will happen on June 10, 2009, as we gather for the 2009 Capital Community Celebration at the Capitol Complex in Pierre. The event is made possible by generous private donations from area businesses and individuals.
"We look forward to coming together for this event each year," said Gov. Mike Rounds. "It's a fun evening of visiting with old and new friends, watching the families and kids participate in the activities, and best of all, enjoying a free picnic."
New this year will be a focus on assisting the Pierre/Ft. Pierre Food Pantry.
"We want to do more to help those in our communities who may need assistance. We are suggesting that people who attend bring a non-perishable food item for donation to the Pierre/Ft. Pierre Food Pantry. As we gather together in friendship, we can make our families and communities stronger," said the governor.
The traditional event of fishing on Capitol Lake will not be held this year. A construction project on the bridge area will cause a draw-down of the water in the lake.
New activities planned for this year include trolley rides, kite making and flying, and an emergency vehicle display (highway patrol helicopter, highway patrol cruiser, National Guard HMMWV, ambulance).
Continuing events include fire truck rides, face painting, 1-mile walk/run, National Guard inflatable games, and the Capital City Band Concert.
