The City of Pierre will host an open house at the new Airport Fire Station just south of the Pierre Regional Airport terminal.
The 6,000 square foot facility houses large emergency response vehicles and equipment utilized in the event of an airport emergency. Federal law mandates that airports with commercial air service provide on-site fire protection for every commercial flight. The new ARFF (Airport Rescue Firefighter) Station replaces a fire station that was built in 1978 and no longer meets federal guidelines.
The new facility cost about $2.1-million to build. The City used a federal grant to cover 90% of the cost. A state grant paid for another 5%. The City paid for the remaining $121,000.
