The Bridge at Remagen
World War II veteran Paul Priest of Box Elder will give an eyewitness account of the U.S. Army's capturing the bridge at Remagen, Germany, on March 7, 1945. The crossing of the Rhine River opened the way for Allied troops to drive into the heart of Germany and hastened the war's end. Priest will have items from World War II on display. Accompanying Priest will be retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col George A. larson, who has written a history of Ellsworth Air Force Base. The book, "Thunder over Dakota, The History of Ellsworth Air Force Base, 1941-2011," is sold at the Heritage Store at the Cultural Heritage Center. Everyone is welcome to attend the free program, sponsored by the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation and the Post 8 American Legion.
