Cub Scout Popcorn Fundraiser
Starting Monday, September 30th, local Scouts will be knocking on your door. That is when local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will begin their annual fund drive. Scouts in our area are affiliated with the Sioux Council - Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Purchasing popcorn is one of the best ways to support the youth involved in the local scouting program. Last year over $460,000 in cash and prizes were earned by scouts throughout the 61-county area of the Sioux Council. Our goal this year is to sell $65,000 worth of popcorn locally to help provide a well-rounded and fun program for area youth. Popcorn Sales are designed to teach salesmanship skills, communication skills and more importantly a way for Scouts to learn financial responsibility by earning their own way through the scouting program. This event also helps shape a Scout's future through higher education. In 2010, 40 Scouts throughout the Sioux Council sold enough popcorn to qualify for a College Scholarship. Once a Scout qualifies and every year after, 6% of their annual sale is placed into a savings account which continues to grow at a rate of up to 6% annually. Scouts can apply the accumulated funds toward their future higher education expenses. A vast majority of the funds raised stay within the local community. Numerous persons and businesses have utilized this event to purchase multiple items to be given away as Christmas gifts, employee gifts and even as a thank you to military personnel. BSA Popcorn Sales ends October 23rd. If you are not contacted by that time and want to support local scouts with a popcorn purchase, please feel free to contact local Scout District Executive, Cora Baldwin at 280-8657.
